TRAVEL REPORT
October 4-8, 2010
Manila-Laguna-Tagaytay
This semester, most of the third year students are very enthusiastic about the enrolled subject Field Trips and Seminars and I myself are looking forward to it. The purpose of the subject is to educate the students about the different and latest trends when it comes to technology. It is set to be the eye opener of the students to realize that what we see in school is nothing compared to what we will see when we land a job. The students have seen different technologies that somehow encouraged them to work with something like it someday. The trip was mostly business, but the exiting parts was on the evening for they have been to places they wanted to go like the famous Divisoria, SM MOA, Enchanted Kingdom and other places they wish they wanted to go. It was an amazing experience for the students for they enjoyed the fullness of the trip and learned a lot of things that is very useful in the near future.
The trip is composed of originally four batches, the first two batches heads first to Manila with the 1st flight and the other two batches head to Manila with the second flight. They accommodated themselves at Garden Plaza Hotel, it was not so nice hotel, there is no elevator, the rooms are not that nice, the facilities are old, I think it never experienced a makeover or something but the people there are quite accommodating. The first night was supposed to be some sort of getting used to, but because most of us were very tired, we all go to sleep very early (I do not know with the others, but I did go to sleep after I settled myself). My roommates are Kuya Eric which I am supposed to assist to, Kuya Godo, Kuya Gonz, and Kuya Rudy. They are all good roommates and they are all responsible with their actions (or some kind of like that).
One of my most unforgettable experiences in Manila was in Divisoria. It was a disaster for me because of people who took advantage of tourist or so. At first it was alright, but because of people who does not follow instruction (specifically to speak in Tagalog), I got into trouble. I knew it from the start that people there will really took advantage to tourist if you act like one. Two of my friends were really hard headed; they spoke the language we are used to because they just want to tease one of my classmates. Since I have type B blood type, I just don’t mind their teasing (a study in Japan showed that blood types are linked to a person’s personality). As we went on in Tutuban Mall, we got in a stall in which all of their merchandise costs ten pesos, I just bought one, and that is a bracelet. After the shopping in the ten peso stall, we got out of the mall because one of my friends wants to buy a slipper which costs less and so she found it outside the mall, in Divisoria. Another friend of mine wanted to buy a jacket because she does not have one. I saw one and I thought it would be great for her so I asked for the vendor if we could take a look of it and I asked the price, he said it costs 280 pesos. I asked him to lower down the price down to 250 and he agreed and I gave it to my friend. When it was payment time, we all got mixed up because it was a misunderstanding. She didn’t want it so returned it because we don’t want to buy it anyway. When we all got out the stall, the vendor got angry and he followed us and mocked my face, I was so nervous because it was my first time to be mocked in public and there were many people who are staring at us. I asked sorry but he did not accept it because he wanted me to buy it. I bought it but in my head I don’t want that jacket and I have to find a way to take my money back.
One lady was just passing by and said she was angry with the action of the vendor and she said “Isumbong mo sa pulis para mag tanda!”, so I got into my nerves and look for the nearest police station. My friends were all hesitant because they were all cowards I should say. So I found one police station and tld them everything that happened. They saw my necklace and they asked if it was real gold, and since it was I said yes and they asked me to wear it off if I don’t want it to be snatched. They asked for the location of the stall and they said it wasn’t their territory, and they are not allowed to touch the territory of the other police station, so they pointed me to the other police station. My classmates were still afraid and nervous, one of them said to me to let go of the money, but I was really strong willed about taking my money back. My friend said “kasabot man ko saimu kuya George, pero what do we have?”, I said to myself that she is just scared or something so I said that “gitudluan baya ko saakong Tatay, saakong Nanay, saakong Tito ug Tita nga dili jud ko mag pa-api”. So we all keep on looking the other police station. We found a Barangay office and I said my complain and they all pointed me out the police station because the police knew what to do, the same classmate said again “kung dili ni mag work kuya huh tama na ha?”, so we all got the police station and finally got the right station. So one police was with me walking and my friends were behind me. When we got to the stall, the police told the vendor not to treat the tourists like that, so I fought with my words and complained in front of him. Immediately a lady appeared and also yells at me, so also yelled at her too with my complaints and she also complained and all that stuff and in the end I got my money back. Afterwards, I walked away with the police and I told my gratitude while my heart was still pumping hard because I was kind of angry. I noticed that my classmates were all gone. I thought to myself that they ran away because from the start they most of them were all afraid except for one. So I did not mind and continued my walking until I saw them also looking for me. As what I’ve thought, they stand back because most of them were all afraid. After that event, my body was trembling like I don’t understand, maybe it was the side effect of the anger I felt.
And that made up my unforgettable experience in Manila! It was not nice but I think it would count as learning and would stick into my mind that most of the people in there are radical mind. If ever I would be in Manila again, I would never go to Divisoria even if their merchandise costs less than what the malls sell, besides I am not used to wear those stuffs and I found out that it is an advantage to buy in the mall because the saleslady are friendly, not like there where they harm you with words or others.
Well, those experiences will be of memories now since I will never be going to Divisoria anymore and if time tells me to, then no matter what I will refuse and that is final.
Day 1
I went a company visit to: SSS and First Academy of Computer Arts
What I’ve learned?
The first time would always be full of anticipation, and as usual I was pretending that I am not excited. After the plane had landed, we immediately went on a company visit. We first went to SSS and saw the physical structure of their data warehouse. Before, I was thinking that when a company has a backup, it refers to a static storage and then retrieves whatever files they can retrieve before a certain crash, but then companies have another location of building where they call it as the damage warehouse or something and consider it as the temporary warehouse if the main warehouse is down. We also went to their card manufacturing site where they showed us their equipments in making cards. The materials of their cards are amazing, they use extraordinary microchips for their cards and if I was not knowledgeable about it, I would not notice because it was so thin and flexible but durable card.
It was also wise for the government to implement the one card policy or something where people who apply to any of the government agency that gives card, only one card shall be use, example, you can use your SSS card for your PhilHealth.
Another company we went through is a school called the First Academy of Computer Arts where they teach graphics design and video editing. I was amazed by how they create things for art. I, myself is very interested when it comes to visual arts and video editing, and they showed us how to create an apple and it was very exhausting. Making an apple would cost too much time, then how much more when it is durian? It would cost days to create it. They also discussed to us about the stories of some of their students who are earning very well. I know that what they do would really be a good thing when they land a job. It is in demand and I know very well that it earns very well.
What I like?
I really like the way they welcomed us, they were really accommodating and they even gave us snacks! They even toured us to their library and to their mini museum where there lies the history of the institution. I like the speakers because they were really enthusiastic in meeting us and one of them are from Davao. Some of them speak in Bisaya where it pumps my heart a bit because of excitement. It was amazing and the venue of their lecture was amazing and comforting. It was air-conditioned and the seats are comfy. When I saw their snacks, my heart really tells me that “See how blessed are the generous people?” and I realized how generous they are, to think we are just students and we are not SSS members but they treated us very well.
I also like the accommodation of the people in First Academy of Computer Arts, their head was very welcoming and their staffs are also that welcoming. I like their rooms because it was full of drawings where students are free to draw their arts. Most of their pieces are anime which I am a big fan of. People nowadays would really appreciate their school if they see them.
What I didn’t like?
SSS employees are great; I’d give two thumbs up for them. Thus, I have no complaints against them. But in First Academy of Computer Arts I have, I don’t like their rooms because it was small and some of their computer units as well. They have to use flat screens and wider rooms for the students to breathe and give more space for the drawing wall, other than that are very good.
Day 2
I went a seminar to: UP Information Technology Training Center (ITTC)
I went a company visit to: IBM and SeaChange
What I’ve learned?
UP is one of the pioneering universities of the country and the leading university when it comes to quality education. It never came into my nerves that this state university would be great in my eyes (or maybe because it was my first time just like my impression with USeP before). They had great facilities that support their needs to improve the level of the quality education that they provide. The talk started with an opening speech by a certain professor there. He talked about lots of things, like how the technology helps people with their living and how impressive and wonderful technology is. We also had the tour within their facilities and introduce us to some of their students and faculty members.
Well actually, I did not really enjoy with the talks because I was really sleepy since we were the first batch who arrived on the previous day and we were not able to recover our energy. The first talk was about writing a good thesis. I’ve learned few scenarios about writing your thesis, and actually I am afraid of that day to come. For me, writing your own thesis would kill your brain cells and she said that your advisers would only be giving pressure on your shoulder for you to work with it. Even now my nerves are wiggling up to the bones since that day is fast approaching. Well, some of her topics are already been discussed by our professor Dr. Gamboa in our subject Technopreneurship 1, like knowing what you want and what you love, what irritates you and what are your strengths for you to be able to think of a topic that you would enjoy working at since at since it is what you love. Knowing what you love is very essential when it comes to deciding a lot of things. It is like building your own business, if you don’t like your business, how would you be able to expand your business of even make it last? That is why that in making your own thesis, even if it is difficult as long as you love that, you have to work with it and learn to love working with difficult things for you to be satisfied when it’s done. Besides, who will be the first person who will be happy when you’re able to do the difficult thesis? Another thing is that organizing your moves for you to have a smooth flow in working.
In the afternoon, we went on a company visit to the UP Ayala Land IT Hub. I never expected that it would look like that; it was like real huge companies and most are well known worldwide. SeaChange was a company where they provide good broadcasting of television and videos. They sell equipments that can be used in cable TVs where people can buy movies or videos and then play it whenever they want. They also showed us how they handle some of the operations they had through their employees. The shocking part was when we learned that not all of them took a course in college that is related to what they are doing right now, as matter of fact, one of them are licensed dentist but worked as a technician in SeaChange.
After SeaChange, we went to a big company and I was really excited because it was IBM. I never thought that IBM was not manufacturing computers anymore and I never thought that they were Business Process Outsourcing Company. I imagined Bill Gates when he went to IBM, he was just proposing an operating system to IBM then it grew something like now. IBM provides an incubator for starting companies. They are accepting whoever wanted to use their facilities and they also have the multi-server system where they connect several servers as one. I really enjoyed in IBM, among the companies we went, IBM was the best and it was the first time I had the feeling of working to a certain company. Before, when we visit or some personnel come to school and promote their company my reaction was just “okay” because I never got interested like this. I was inspired that they hire anyone because they do not underestimate the potentials of people. When you’d ask me, there are a lot of people where they do not know how to communicate well but they are really great when it comes to work. It was an inspiring company and I pray that someday, I would be working in IBM and become a Manager or the Boss.
One of the things I’ve learned in IBM is that they are supporting developers and they are providing them all the equipments they need whenever somebody approaches them and tell them about their plans. It’s a good thing that they do not choose the plans that is being presented to them because not all good plans are successful and not all worse plans would be worse.
What I liked?
I like the warm welcome greetings of the facilitators and their facilities. I was amazed with their computers that they lend for their students to use. They were using Mac computers and most of it was Mac. Before when I saw a Mac computer and use it, I was disappointed because I did not like the interface, but when I saw a lot of Mac units and saw how they use it with ease I was really amazed and learned how to appreciate its beauty. Wow, if there were Mac units in USeP and all those 22” units, I would really brag USeP everywhere I go.
There is also a spot in there where the students are allowed to plug their laptops for charging and connect to WiFi and the great thing is that it is for FREE! Yeah, you heard it right it’s for free, not like in USeP where they always put passwords and they block certain sites that the students cannot fully use the connection. I wish in some ways USeP could be like UP when it comes to facilities.
In SeaChange, I like their accommodation, even the Americans welcomed us well. In IBM was really great, IBM is two thumbs up as well.
They have given us a good place to listen to their lectures and they have provided us with great speakers. I like the concept of the SeaChange where before they discussed everything that they do, they have shown to us first a video of what they do. In IBM the speaker was really good at inspiring people, she was able to convince the stockholders of IBM global to establish the development center here in the Philippines. As far as I could understand, they are pointing that the development center was what we know as the incubator for starting companies. It was great that they won that one.
What I didn’t like?
I was kind of disappointed with their later treatment, since I heard one of them said “Oh my God,” they were telling us to fall in line and we were not able to fall properly because of the small space and one of them made a face. Actually, it was quite reasonable but we were their guests therefore they have to treat us right just like what we do with our guests since we are not ignorant, we are also knowledgeable with those stuffs since we are with the same course. I do not know why they did that but I was really disappointed. Another thing I did not like was the American, who did a speech, it was really boring and I really slept because I did not like it. Because of my loose of interest, I was not able to listen with his topics properly. At first I was very excited in to listen because of his profile, it was like “he worked in Apple” is way too cool in my ears, but when he started to talk it was kind of disappointing. Most of the Americans I met and do a speech were good, but that one was not, thus I’d consider that as the things that I didn’t like in UP.
There was also a post there where is says that “NO DURIAN CANDY NO ENTRY” where it made my eyebrow rise and at the back of my mind I said “do they think we are really like big ignorant?” I fully understand that they like durian but it was really unreasonable, they could ask us if we have brought some but what they did was insulting.
Another thing I did not like was the snacks they have provided as well as the lunch. We have paid 500 pesos expecting that they would give us very good food, but it was very disappointing because the food was not that good. The snacks they gave were just one bite for some of us since it was very small. I do not understand why but it was very pitiful for us to eat those.
Day 3
I went a company visit to: ASTI and TTI
What I’ve learned?
In the morning, we visited ASTI, just beside the UP Diliman Campus. This is a company where they are selling products that they made. They are focused mostly on the needs of the people. They have gadgets like a sensor if a Tsunami was coming. They also have a gadget that is a form of a customized cellular phone on a computer. Their gadgets were great and they continue to study in making other gadgets, but I’ve learned that they had the ideas from the students which were partly disappointing since I thought they were their ideas, but they were great that they made it into a reality.
After they presented to us their products, they showed us a presentation about the Filipino Operating System called the Bayanihan 5. It is a Linux based open operating system, they promoted its software and as what I have noticed they are comparing it to Microsoft, thus I’d say Microsoft is still edgy. Some of their software was already familiar to me since we had a subject last semester titled operating systems.
After our visit in ASTI, we went to TTI. TTI is a company where they focus on networking. They have showed us their equipments and those are really huge equipments.
What I liked?
Like what most company have showed to us. The community in ASTI and TTI are very welcoming and accommodating. I like the way they treat us and I like the way they show us about a lot of things. I learn the most in TTI because it was really discussion and they even have the equipments in which they were able to demonstrate to us what does one equipment do. In ASTI, I really like the speaker of Bayanihan, she is very cute and very welcoming too.
What I didn’t like?
I did not like the first speakers in ASTI because they were not able to answer one of my questions about our upcoming thesis about technopreneurship. I asked them if they could give us a good topic for our thesis but what they did was suggestions on how to promote our business. It was not nice since it was what they are doing in that department and yet they were not able to give use the answers that we needed.
Another thing that I did not like was the temperature. ASTI and TTI is very hot, and I mean it literally especially in TTI. Most of their buildings were not in a well temperature.
Day 4
I went a company visit to: PLDT
What I’ve learned?
Before, I really thought that PLDT was just a telephone company with internet business as its sideline, but I was amazed to know that they are also the provider of smart. Most of the things I’ve learned in them are their history and about their inventions. One of their inventions are the WiFi enabled ATM machine. PLDT is also a communications provider for banks and other companies where they provide service for companies to be able to connect to their other branches or devices. Most of their business is mostly telecommunications and mobility.
One of my greatest learning in PLDT is about their history. I’ve learned that PLDT was already giving service even before the Americans came in the country, and they were disbanded because of the colonization of the Americans.
I also learned something about the reason why the canopy device of smart provides a poor internet connection. It is because the satellite that is reserved for your place has been overloaded for too many users and they have to upgrade it for them to provide good services.
What I liked?
I really like their accommodation and I also liked their speakers. They taught us a lot of things and they even managed to give us a drink before we leave. They were very accommodating, welcoming and very generous. They also took photo shots from us for their documentation which was a good thing for me because it was a proof that I was there and they were very good to us. I also liked the speaker, he was young but he was very smart and he knew every answer to our questions.
What I didn’t like?
The thing I did not like to them is their security, because we are not allowed to take pictures inside the facility, although I was already expecting it because we were also forbidden to take pictures in Sutherland.
Day 5
I went a company visit to: MMDA Communications and Command Center
What I’ve learned?
I never thought that even traffic jams were to be treated like that; it was really great to see that they really value the welfare of their citizens that they have computerized way of handling traffics jams. They had that technology where they can identify the number of vehicles on queue to take its turn in a crossing. They have microchips below the road just under the line where the vehicles can stop for them to pass on the traffic. The microchips are then connected to their computers and then a program (I think written in C) will then calculate the time for the vehicles to pass. It was amazing to see that the number of vehicles are then counted and they are allotted I think ten seconds of time for them to pass. Another amazing stuff also is the camera they have implanted on the accident prone areas. It was for the purpose that they can monitor the accidents that happen in the streets and they can even record it for preview.
Reporters can even have a copy of it but to give their word that they will not broadcast it aside from the news broadcast. They also have those amazing televisions that were put together to form one monitor and see different angles of the traffic. They have used technology quiet amazing for the improvement of the traffic management, but the sad thing is that there are already a lot of cars in Metro Manila that it is already very difficult to manage the traffic.
I also learned that they also cover not only the traffic management but also the garbage management. I saw one video that shows the garbage that is just being piled. Amazingly, they work 24/7 and they do not have holiday breaks which were noble since I myself would want to have a vacation for even sometime.
What I liked?
I really like their accommodation. They have welcomed us well and they have provided personnel to entertain us and tell us about their technologies. Their people made the atmosphere a place where their visitors or tourists like us would not be having the difficulties of adjusting since they were very accommodating and they entertain questions and the amazing thing is that they know the answers of every question we give because they were really taking seriously their job. I find their job very difficult, because they have to be very careful for them to prevent the traffics, and yet they whole heartedly accept the job and even dedicate their work for the community.
What I didn’t like?
The whole of our tour in MMDA Communications and Command Center was good, except that they must have a place where there are a small talk or somewhat introduction of what they do and what they have before they go directly to the materials or equipments they use. There are cases where some of us might find it difficult to understand since we are not well informed of what they do. But the overall of the trip was good.
APPENDIX
Well, there are only few things that I want to emphasize in the trip, first is the Tagaytay and the Enchanted Kingdom. The very reason why I was very enthusiastic with the trip is because of the Tagaytay and the Enchanted Kingdom trip, but it was very disappointing because we had limited time. We were not able to ride the exciting rides like the space shuttle and others; the great ride I rode was only the anchors away, beside that nothing. Because of the anchors away, it gave me an eagerness to ride all the heart pumping rides for me to enjoy everything but it was nothing because it was limited. Tagaytay was also short. I wish to ride their zipline and return riding with a cable car, but I was not able to do that because of the limited time and they did not allow us to go to that place because it was not on the itinerary. If I could only go back there, I would ride all those rides.
I would also want to suggest that next time; they should pick a better hotel. Although the people there are accommodating and the hotel is not that bad at all, but it was creepy in there and my bed was on the floor (that’s what my father call a “floor master”) and there were five of us in a room, and there were some rooms where there are six of them and some rooms place their bed like the squatter’s area where like it was no other place to put the bed. I suggest that next time, the maximum number of people in a room would be 4 people and a hotel which is not creepy looking and I hope that next time the hotel is inviting and does have a free WiFi, not like there where you have to pay 65 pesos to avail the WiFi access.
The buss arrangement also should be boys and girls so that companies would not think that our university is a boy’s town or girl’s town. Most of the companies we have gone to ask us “CoEd ba and school niyo? Kasi lalake kayong lahat” which was really irritating.
Last and the most important thing is the food, most of the food they serve is very disappointing, some were tasteless, and some food has that weird tastes. My favorite restaurant was the sizzlers where we were able to eat properly and delightfully, other than that was disappointing. Some students also have to eat in the same yummy restaurant while poor us have to eat twice in the tasteless food at the hotel.
The overall of the trip is amazing and I wish to repeat it again, but I do not want to repeat the expenses again because I am poor.
I am praying that these memories will be kept in the hearts of those who participate it because it was a great memory for me since it was my first time to be in metro manila and it was great, although there were unpleasant things that happened, but the overall of it was great. I give thanks to all who made it possible, and I give my heartfelt gratitude to the Almighty God for giving me this opportunity to be able to go to places like Tagaytay, Enchanted Kingdom, MOA, where it never stood in my mind that I would be able to be there one day. It was an amazing experience, I hope to be back in there someday and I pray that in that day I do have the enough resources for everything and I pray for double fun and excitement when I come back in there.
